Aage Frederiksen

1938 - 2003

La Jolla, California

Aage Frederiksen was a life long athlete, an adventurous traveler of the world, a successful immigrant entrepreneur and a late blooming family man. Always, he was everyone's favorite friend.

Aage was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, to Elly Braarup and Soren Christian Frederiksen. He was the older of two brothers and had a very close relationship with his younger brother Borge.

Aage grew up during and after the Second World War in Denmark. Even though his parents had modest means they always made sure their beloved boys had what they needed. One of those things was a well oiled bike to support Aage's biggest hobby, biking. Aage was on his bike countless hours: on the road, in races and on the velodrome.

He always wanted to see the world and live and work abroad. After high school and a four-year apprenticeship as a hair stylist, he was ready for the world. Speaking no English his first journey took him to Cambridge, England. Here he worked his trade, learning English on the job, and quickly got himself on the world renowned rowing team.

From here he went on to Canada where he worked in a small town called London, Ontario. After 3 years in the cold north Aage was ready for a new adventure and signed up with a cruise ship. He sailed twice around the world styling hair and dancing with countless celebrities. On his return Saks Fifth Avenue hired Aage to style hair for the Manhattan jet-setters.

Finally Aage came to San Diego in 1965. Within a few years, Aage had built one of the most successful salons in La Jolla where he operated under the trade name "Marcel". His charm and good looks also made him a very eligible bachelor.

Aage worked as a hair stylist for 20 years. He was an entrepreneur at heart, running a closet store, owning real estate and renovating his own house countless times. He helped others with design and house renovation as well.

Aage loved life. At the age of 46 he retired to fully take advantage of what life had to offer devoting his life to enjoying and helping his friends and his family.

Aage was an active man. His passion for staying fit took him to the YMCA of La Jolla, where he established cherished long time friendships. His commitment to helping out made him the number one fundraiser several years in a row. A life long athlete, he also enjoyed skiing, tennis, swimming and most of all his passion for biking.

Aage and Anne-Marie met for the first time in 1970. In Anne Marie, a fellow Dane and hairstylist, he found his soul mate. They married in 1993, and Aage entered the most satisfying phase of his life. Together they traveled the world to exotic places and enjoyed the company of several good friends on many of these trips.

In his life with Anne Marie he found true happiness becoming an involved step-father to her two daughters Kirstine and Annette. Kirstine and Aage created a special bond, which is why Kirstine has now changed her last name to Frederiksen.

He has also remained a loving uncle and substitute father, for Birgitte and Soren, his beloved late brother Borge's children.

All who knew Aage feel profoundly the loss of this charming, strong man, generous with his time and his joy in life.
